The outer layer of scalp, Epidermis hosts a yeast called Malassezia which feeds on sebum, produced by sebaceous glands. As they break down the sebum into saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, the earlier is consumed by the yeast while the latter is soaked back in the scalp leading to breakage of skin barrier and moisture loss. Our skin usually renews itself every 2-3 weeks but owing to this unusual breakage, it speeds up the renewal process that leads to accumulation of cells.
