The hair root is enclosed in the hair follicle which is present underneath the skin. At the base, there’s a part called dermal papilla which is connected to the bloodstream and is responsible for providing nourishment for hair growth. As the cells grow, it keeps moving upward while gradually hardening and arrange themselves in concentric layers. The three inner layers become the hair, made up of the cuticle, the cortex, and the medulla (absent in thinner hair). The cortex is the most important part of the hair which consists of fibres bunched together within which are small, coiled springs that give the hair its elasticity. These fibres get damaged with activities like blow-drying, colouring and straightening. It makes the hair brittle and lifeless. Furthermore, if the pH value of scalp remains imbalanced, it leads to cuticle damage and fibre breakage.
